Traditional Industry South ern Service Corps Assists Taiwanese Fastener Makers to Transform into Creative Service Providers(Source: MOEA)

The fastener industry is one of the major industries in Taiwan, and is ranked the third biggest exporter in the world with export value of NTD$ 130.9 billion in 2014. The major concentration of industry clusters is in southern Taiwan, which accounts for more than 70% of the total national production. However, with most of Taiwanese fastener producers mainly focusing on manufacturing, the price per unit has experienceds a rather slow growth in recent years. Traditional Industry Southern Service Corps hence begins to assist Taiwanese fastener makers, with “Promoting High-Value Products” as the strategy, to improve their products in order to avoid price war with newly -emerging countries, and aims to help these domestic manufacturers to enter the global market of high-value fasteners. At the same time, the Corps also helps the industry in planning a creative service system with the ICT technology, marching towards the servitization in manufacturing. Taiwan Shan Yin International Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Taiwan Shan Yin) was established in the Benjhou Industrial Park in Kaohsiung 30 years ago with a capital of NTD$ 2.25 million, producing specialized and environmental-friendly fasteners for 3C products and automotive parts. Taiwan Shan Yin has developed its core technologies for producing high-value fasteners based on the concept of “Quality, Design and Reputation.” After years of effort in innovation and improving company’s product quality, Taiwan Shan Yin has successfully entered the automotive supply chain, providing high-end screws to companies including Subaru and Honda of Japan and Volkswagen of Germany. Seeing that the majority of fastener manufacturers in Taiwan still rely on the imported critical manufacturing technical procedure for surface treatment, Taiwan Shan Yin started seeking a way to transform and upgrade, and has invested more than 10 years in researching and developing a new coating technology. The company is now equipped with its own independent production line for nano-scale surface coating, exclusively manufacturing fasteners with its patented coating technology. This coating technology has also obtained the accreditation of several national-level laboratories in Sweden and the U.S, which meets the coating requirements for green buildings, and is therefore able to replace the imported technologies and services for domestic producers. Benefited from the success of the nano-scale coating technology, Taiwan Shan Yin continues to develop new products such as noiseless screw and bi-metal self-driving screw, which are designed to be wear-resistant and anti-loosening during installation with the promise of 50 years of rust-free. In order to push the entire industry forward, the Corps has, in conjunction with the guidance of the Industrial Development Bureau, successfully transformed Taiwan Shan Yin from a traditional original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of fasteners into a manufacturing service provider, by changing its role in the industrial chain and setting up a model of new service and technology. Taiwan Shan Yin is one of the leading models of successful transformation in the fasteners manufacturing industry, changing from a manufacturer to a manufacturing solution provider. By assisting the industry to break through the technical bottleneck of surface treatment, Taiwan Shan Yin also has experienced a joint growth with the entire industry, and together they aim to march towards the international market of high-value fasteners.
