The Bureau of Standards, Metrology & Inspection (BSMI) held an international conference on May 18 at National Taiwan University Hospital International Convention Center to celebrate May 20, World Metrology Day. The conference, titled "International Measurements and its Future Trend," corresponded to the theme chosen by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) for 2015: "Measurements and Light". The conference not only facilitated exchanges among experts from the academic, public and private sectors and the research community but also improved the understanding of international measurements, measurement technology and its application in commerce and everyday life. The opening remark was delivered by the Ministry of Economic Affairs Deputy Minister Cho Shih-Chao. He pointed out the importance of measurements and light application in industries. Light technology and its application are central to today's global industrial development and can offer solutions to energy and communication challenges, he said. In promoting solar energy, lighting and the related photovoltaic issues, Taiwan also strives to integrate light, electricity and mechanical technology according to an accurate and reliable measurement system. In the future, the Ministry of Economic Affairs will continue to devote efforts and resources to upgrade the domestic industrial chain through such integration. Dr. Martin Milton, director of the BIPM, was invited to deliver a keynote speech on "The Importance of Metrology for Standards, Industry and Trade," said BSMI Director-General Liou Ming-Jong. Dr. Milton explained that the stability, consistency and stability of measurements are vital to the development of the society and economy, adding that his bureau will offer support to measurement organizations in different regions. President of Chinese Culture University Lee Tien-Rein also gave a talk on "From Light to Color: the Path of Seeing the World." In his lively presentation, he focused on the application of light and color in everyday life and shared measurement related information with the audience. The conference drew a total of 200 participants, including representatives from the Taipei Measuring Instrument Association, Taichung Measuring Instrument Association, Industrial Technology Research Institute's Center for Measuring Standards, Electronics Testing Center, Taiwan Electric Research & Testing Center and Taiwan Accreditation Foundation. A good tool is important in helping one master a job, said the BSMI. All light applications and global projects should be based on an accurate and reliable measurement system. The photovoltaic industry, light application and efforts to improve people's living quality all rely heavily on advanced measurement technology and management. The conference provided a valuable opportunity for experts from different fields to exchange opinions and will help promote the development of related domestic industries.
