Giveaways and fun at the measurement exhibit BSMI, MOEA July 13, 2015(Source:MOEA)

An exhibit on measurement will be held from July 17 to November 22, the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) said, inviting parents to bring their children to Kaohsiung's National Science and Technology Museum this summer for fun and informative encounters. The "Fun in SI, Fun in Conversion" exhibit offers a fascinating look back at the evolution of Taiwanese units of measurement and explains the history of the units we use today. The bureau noted that "jia," "ping," and "taijin," are actually derived from traditional Dutch and Japanese measurement systems. The exhibit also features a game where participants need to pass challenges under the theme "Measure," "Convert" and "Share" in order to win gifts such as measurement paper tapes and meter prototype keychains. The game is designed to help the public understand more about measurement units through history, literature and everyday experiences. The inconvenience of conversion under tradition unit systems should inspire appreciation for the existence of legal units of measurement. The BSMI has been working closely with Kaohsiung's National Science and Technology Museum since 2001 to hold educational exhibitions and activities. In the past years, both parties have spared no efforts in promoting science education and preserving measurement relics. On display are measurement relics dating back to the Japanese colonial period and the victory in the war of resistance against Japan. Some collections, such as a poster introducing the definition of basic units of measurement in the Japanese colonial period and a photo of the ceremony in the national metrological conference taken in 1930, have never been displayed before.
