BSMI integrates electric motorcycle standards to promote industry development BSMI, MOEA August 31, 2015(Source:MOEA)

The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) has integrated a set of national standards which will uniformly apply to electric motorcycles powered by three different types of batteries. The 12 integrated standards, regulating performance test methods and safety specifications, will serve as a reference for industry players in the field of research, development and manufacture and boost the development of the local electric motorcycle industry. Most electric motorcycles today are powered by lithium batteries. Nevertheless, lead acid batteries were used in earlier models and fuel cells-a device with great potential to be further developed-found in newer models. Taking into consideration the future evolution of batteries, the BSMI has decided to integrate relevant standards by incorporating the CNS 14368(15 serial standards) and the CNS 15491(8 serial standards) into CNS 15818, CNS 15819 and CNS 15820(total 12 serial standards). Please refer to the attached table for details. The integrated standards regulate hill climbing ability tests, maximum speed tests, accelerated ability tests, range ability and reference energy consumption tests, accelerated durability tests, tests of indication for the state of charge and electromagnetic compatibility tests, all of which are applicable to electric motorcycles with lead acid batteries, lithium batteries and fuel cells. Compared to motorcycles powered by gasoline, electric motorcycles generate less noise and pollution. Under the global trend of energy conservation and emission reduction, electric motorcycles are a greener choice, said the BSMI. The standards can provide a foundation for subsidy policies, encourage domestic purchase and boost local industry development. They also serve as a reference for authorities planning to establish management regulations.
