BSMI updates national standards on children's cots, cribs and cradles BSMI, MOEA June 2, 2017(Source:MOEA)

To ensure that children can grow up in a safe environment, the Bureau of Standards, Metrology & Inspection (BSMI) has announced the revision of standards for children's cots, cribs and cradles on April 18, 2017 after consulting the European Standard (EN). The revised CNS 11676 "Children's cots and folding cots for domestic use" and CNS 12990 "Cribs and cradles for domestic use" include regulations about safety requirements, labels and warnings. The new standards, which aims to ensure quality and safety, can give some peace of mind to new parents as well as guidance to local manufacturers. The revised CNS 11676 specifies requirements for children's cots with an internal length between 90 cm (900 mm) and 140 cm (1,400 mm). If the cot is multi-functional (doubling as a diaper changing station or fence), it must comply with relevant product standards. Meanwhile, the revised CNS 12990 applies to cribs and cradles that are used for babies when they cannot sit, crawl or hold up their body. If other items are added to the main product, relevant product standards should also be met. The safety requirement of the two new standards include material, stability and structure specifications. The requirement is expected to greatly reduce the risk of accidents. The BSMI urges parents to check cots, cribs and cradles after assembly and before use. They are also advised to choose products that comply with national standards to ensure product quality and safety of babies. Manufacturers are advised to make products according to national standards. The BSMI will continue to monitor international standards for children's products and update the national standard as appropriate.
