Attendance of the 25th meeting of the General Conference on Weights and Measures BSMI MOEA December 5, 2014(Source: MOEA)

The 25th meeting of the General Conference on Weights and Measures (Conference Generale des Poids et Mesures, CGPM) took place in Versailles France from 18 to 20 November 2014. As an Associate, Chinese Taipei joined the meeting, and its delegation was led by BSMI Director General, Dr. Ming-Jong Liou, accompanied by the representatives of National Measurement Laboratory and Economic Division, Taipei Representative Office in France. The Conference brought together the delegates of the governments of the Member States with observers from the Associates of the CGPM. The President of the French Academie des Sciences, Professor Philippe Taquet, chaired the meeting, which included presentations from the CIPM President, BIPM Director, the Presidents of the CIPM Consultative Committees, three international organizations, and a number of invited speakers. The CGPM adopted five resolutions addressing scientific and institutional matters, including the future redefinition of the International System of Units, the SI. The base units that are being considered for revision these years are second, meter, kilogram and ampere. There will be no change in their magnitudes, symbols and names except for the change in definition. The reason for the change is to ensure its long term stability. For example, the old definition of kilogram is based on material artifact, that is by nature cannot be absolutely constant value. Since 2002, Chinese Taipei has been an Associate of the CGPM with the signature of MRA(Mutual Recognition Arrangement). As the conformity of international measurement standards in the fields of international trade, health and care, public safety and environmental protection are further stressed, the attendance of CGPM helps Chinese Taipei bring it's weights and measures affairs in line with the world trends.
