BSMI announces office equipment accessibility guidelines for elderly persons and persons with disabilities BSMI, MOEA January 8, 2016(Source:MOEA)

Technology has made our lives much easier. However, the complex and versatile features of technology products often hinder seniors and physically/mentally challenged individuals from use. In view of this, the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) has announced the CNS 15854 "Information technology-Office equipment accessibility guidelines for elderly persons and persons with disabilities" on November 11,2015. The standard specifies accessibility guidelines for product manufacturers and service providers when planning, developing and designing copy machines, page printers and multi-function devices. The CNS 15854 is based on the ISO 10779 "Information technology-Office equipment accessibility guidelines for elderly persons and persons with disabilities" and its purpose is to improve office equipment accessibility for elderly persons and persons with disabilities. Accessibility difficulty categories include: "visual impairment or no vision," "hearing impairment or no hearing," "difficulty in voice production," "limited access," "muscle weakness or difficulty in controlling refined actions," "damage in the lower limbs," "wheelchair," "access to only one hand" and "limited movement or prosthesis in the arm, leg and fingers." To improve accessibility, guidelines for general and substitution functions are provided. The BSMI said that the CNS 15854 specifies accessibility guidelines for product developers when planning, developing and designing office devices to the needs of elderly persons and persons with disabilities. Accessibility can be improved by providing display functions, touch panels, listening options and arranging operation buttons. Office devices that adhere to the standard can be used by a wider public, thus raising efficiency and increasing effectiveness.
