BSMI develops gas measurement system to mitigate air pollution(Source:MOEA)

Vehicle emissions (such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons) are the main source of air pollution in the metropolitan area, and environmental protection agencies are taking the issue seriously. To enhance the accuracy of the result of regular vehicle emission inspections, the Bureau of Standards, Metrology & Inspection (BSMI) has developed a gas measurement system for emission concentration inspection. The system, which provides calibration service to domestic vehicle emission inspectors, can accelerate calibration time, cut down calibration costs, help with measurement tracking, ensure accurate measurement of hazardous gases in the air and safeguard public safety. Regular vehicle emission inspection is mandatory and it is the key to air pollution control, said the BSMI. The new system provides a retrospective comparison of figures stored in the exhaust gas analyzers in 2,700 motorcycle inspection stations and 500 plus car inspection stations nationwide. The new system works as the reference standard to help the analyzers obtain comparable and traceable measuring results. The system also increases the accuracy of analyzers and reduces the calibration time to one to two months (overseas calibration takes three to six months). For industry users, the cost of purchasing standard gas is expected to drop 50 percent from 100,000-150,000 NTD to 50,000-70,000 NTD. The system can effectively mitigate vehicle emissions and reduce the environmental impacts. The BSMI said that air pollution is becoming more and more serious and that the classification of hazardous gases is becoming more complex. Therefore, accurate measurement is essential to effective air pollution control. In response to the need of the public and environmental policies, the BSMI will not only establish measurement standards for gas concentration inspections to safeguard air quality and public health, but also implement government policies to ensure environmental sustainability.
