In the one decade since the Industrial Development Bureau began to assist industries in carbon emission reduction in 2006, industries have cumulatively reduced over 11 million tons of carbon emissions. This reduction is more than the carbon emission from the total electricity consumption (203 billion kWh) of New Taipei City in 2014. Compared to ten years ago, today, for every NTD 1 industries earn, the amount of carbon emission decreases by 45%. This demonstrates the result of industrial transformation towards low-carbon economy. In the future, Industrial Development Bureau will continue to cooperate with industries to implement carbon emission reduction.
1. Continually assist industries in response to domestic and international pressure on carbon emission reduction
In response to the global low-carbon competition set by the Paris Agreement, as well as to reach the carbon emission reduction targets of "Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC)" and "Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Management Act," industries have to continue with carbon emission reduction. In addition, Industrial Development Bureau will maintain its promotion of industrial upgrade and energy conservation by various assistance measures.
2. The joint effort between industries and Industrial Development Bureau in the past ten years resulted in industrial carbon productivity having grown 1.8 times
Since 2006, Industrial Development Bureau has done several works, namely to support industries on voluntary greenhouse gas reduction, to establish service groups for manufacturing sectors on carbon emission reduction, to encourage integration of energy and resource in industrial parks, and to promote green factory label system. By cooperating with industries over the last decade, carbon productivity has grown 1.8 times. Moreover, industries can now earn up to NTD 3.8 million per ton of CO2 as compared to NTD 2.1 million ten years ago.
3. Industrial Development Bureau jointly develops strategies of carbon emission reduction with industries, and assists industries in transforming towards low-carbon economy
This year, Industrial Development Bureau invited industries to form a seven-industry working group to stay abreast of industrial needs and to assist them in breaking through obstacles. In the future, Industrial Development Bureau will help them to achieve carbon emission reduction targets through subsidizing industrial low-carbon technological applications of information and communication-based energy management technology, high energy efficiency and conservation products and low-carbon technologies, improvement of manufacturing processes, replacement of old equipment with new one, and promotion of alternative low-carbon fuels (e.g. natural gas or biofuel).
