BSMI establishes standard for pressure sore prevention mattress BSMI, MOEA July 27, 2016(Source:MOEA)

There is a soaring demand for long-term care in Taiwan as the population continues ages. To meet the needs of the physically challenged and long-term bedridden patients, the Bureau of Standards, Metrology & Inspection (BSMI) has established the standard for pressure sore prevention mattress for home use. The CNS 15910, which is consisted of three parts, is designed to meet the demand of home care and enhance product quality. A pressure sore is also called a pressure ulcer. When pressure is applied to the skin over a long period of time, the skin blood circulation is hindered, causing a pressure sore. Pressure sore prevention mattress works by diffusing the patient's body weight and reducing body pressure. Although there is no international standard for such mattress, considering domestic needs, the BSMI has established the CNS 15910 "Pressure sore prevention mattress for home use" based on JIS (Japan Industrial Standards) T 9256 "Pressure distribution mattress for home use." Japan is an elderly friendly country known for developing long-term care standards. The CNS 15910 can be applied two types of mattresses: replace static types and alternating pressure types. The attached file includes names of mattress parts and consumers can choose the type according to their needs. The standard specifies the performance of body pressure reduction, the durability , the electric performance and material requirements. The standard provides a guidance for manufacturers and is expected to contribute to safer, better pressure sore prevention products for home use.
