On November 16, a symposium with the theme of “Key Strategies and Opportunities for the Commercialization of Interdisciplinary Intellectual Property” was held by the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs at the Garden Villa in Kaohsiung. At the symposium, the commercialization of intellectual property (IP) and the services of IP technologies were discussed and demonstrated. The combined efforts of different agencies, including the Industrial Technology Research Institute, the Center for Regional Industry Academia Collaboration of National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, the Center for Regional Industry Academia Collaboration of National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, and companies providing services of IP technologies, displayed a successful outcome in commercializing intellectual property and creating opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation. Moreover, Pi-yu Lin, Director of the Knowledge Services Division of the Industrial Development Bureau, Yu-huei Yang, Director General of the Department of Technological and Vocational Education of the Ministry of Education, and Hong-rong Wang, Deputy Director-general of the Kaohsiung City Government’s Economic Development Bureau, were invited to witness the results of the commercialization of interdisciplinary intellectual property and the services of IP technologies.
Dr. Roger C. Y. Chen, president of National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, and Dr. Ching-yu Yang, president of National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, participated in this symposium as session moderators. The first session dealt with key factors and opportunities from the outsourcing of intellectual property of schools, while the second addressed the results and experiences of industry-academy cooperation on the commercialization of IP. In the first session, venture capitalists and managers who work in agencies providing services of IP technologies shared their insights on various issues, such as the important factors in commercializing patent technology, valuation of IP assets, IP matching services, and IP laws. The speakers not only provided tips on the use of IP for those who work for schools, but also showed the achievements of the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, which has set up a platform for qualified IP companies to share resources and connect with schools and businesses for future cooperation. In the second session, companies that had received counsel from the government shared their successful experiences in working with schools on the commercialization of patent technology, in the hope of facilitating IP commercialization.
