According to the report published by Taiwan’s Science & Technology Policy Research and Information Center, most enterprises have invested a great deal of monetary resources to be granted with intellectual property rights (IPR); however, only few IPRs are able to generate the expected meaningful benefits for their businesses. Therefore, in order to protect the hard-earned R&D technical results, enterprises should plan strategically to acquire only the most important IPs for their business. The IDB (the Industrial Development Bureau under Ministry of Economic Affairs) has been promoting the TIPS (Taiwan Intellectual Property Management Systems) to assist the enterprises getting the greatest benefits in business via the IPRs,. thus enhancing the overall competitiveness of the company. In 2016, a total of 20 enterprises and one school have obtained the TIPS verification and received award from IDB in recognition of their excellent performances. Building the intellectual property management systems is a fundamental enterprise structure. Enterprises should, based on the industrial sizes and types, provide further IP planning in compliance and in accordance with direction of the business operations. For example, manufacturing industry should focus on patent and trade secret to protect their technology; the service industry should be more concern with their trademark and their trade secret; and cultural creative industry should strengthen the protection of copyright. In order to assist the enterprises to complete this intellectual property classification management, IDB will continue to provide various resources including online resources such as training material, guideline, and IP software tool, etc. Furthermore, all the IP related measures including IP diagnosis, consultancy, and verification will comply with the standard of TIPS 2016.
